Overview

The Title IV-E Public Child Welfare Training Program for MSW students at the UW-Madison School of Social Work is designed to educate and train graduate level social work students for preparation for employment as advanced practitioners in public child welfare. The goals of the program are to strengthen Wisconsin's public child welfare workforce and to produce social work leaders as public child welfare practitioners and/or as public child welfare supervisors or managers.

MSW trainees in the Title IV-E Public Child Welfare Training Program are required to complete a specialized curriculum aimed at preparation for employment as advanced child welfare practitioners. Trainees are full-time graduate students - either two-year students beginning their program of study at the Professional Foundation level or one-year students completing the Advanced Practice Concentration year in Child Welfare. Individual student preparation and academic background determines the time in the program. Applicants to the traineeship must hold U.S. citizenship at the time of application.

Traineeship Provisions

Trainees admitted to the IV-E Training Program in 2007 received the following:

  • A stipend of $6300 (Professional Foundation Students) or $7200 (Concentration Year Students) for the academic year
  • Tuition and fees (in-state, out-of-state, Minnesota reciprocity)
  • Books and supplies funds and mileage to and from field site

Trainees graduating from the IV-E Training Program agreed to the following:

  • To complete the Training Curriculum and adhere to Stipend Contract
  • To participate in all Traineeship Activities
  • Upon graduation, to accept employment in the area of Public Child Welfare (i.e., Children's Protective Services, Treatment Foster Care, or Special Needs Adoption) and remain employed for a 12-month period for each year of funding received. Please note that trainees need to be able and willing to take available positions in the State of Wisconsin, which may necessitate relocation.
