Our new
Part-Time MSW program is offered on two sites: the UW-Madison campus for those in the
greater Madison area and on the UW-Eau Claire campus for those who live in the northwest part of the state. The Part-Time MSW Program is designed to allow students who are not able to pursue full-time study to work towards an MSW degree on a structured, time-extended basis.
Courses offered on Saturdays
Field work options may include place of employment
Advanced Standing available
Exempion Exams for professional foundation courses available
Concentration in Child, Youth and Family Welfare
Financial Aid Resources available
Traditional and Advanced Standing options are offered. Students must meet the usual School of Social Work admission requirements.
MSW Program Prerequisites:
The following are eligibility requirements for admission to the Master’s program:
30 credits of
Social Science courses completed, such as courses in American government,
anthropology, behavioral disabilities, economics, human development,
political science, psychology, sociology, social work,and women's
studies. Applicants who do not meet this criterian cannot be considered
for admission.
An approved statistics course taken within seven years from
date of graduation with a grade of C
or better. A list of approved statistics courses offered
throughout the state is available through the School of Social Work.
Applicants who have not completed an approved course may be considered for
admission to the MSW Program, but must complete an approved stats
course in summer prior to enrolling in the first part-time social work program course.
Advanced Standing is granted to students who meet the following criteria:
B.S.W. is no older than seven years from date of graduation to date of enrollment into the part-time program.
Grade of B or better in Social Work courses, C or better in statistics.
Full Advanced Standing students complete the part-time program in 2 years, the same program as those with a recent B.S.W.
Exemption Options:
Those who do not meet the advanced standing criteria may exempt out of Professional Foundation courses through examination. Exemption exams are free and available for the following courses: SW 605 Field of Social Work; SW 606 Social Policy; SW 650 Research Methods; SW 711 Human Behavior and the Environment; and Statistics. Reading lists to prepare for these exams may be found HERE.
Students whose B.S.W. is older than seven years are also eligible to complete a portfolio exemption exam to test out of the Professional Foundation field courses (SW 400 and SW 401 Field and Integrative Seminars I & II).
Tuition and Fees
Part-time students at both campuses pay UW-Madison graduate tuition and fees and a per course part-time program fee. The chart below lists the most recent tuition rates.
