WELCOME TO THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM

Dear Prospective Student,

I am delighted that you are interested in learning more about our Ph.D. program in social welfare. Deciding where to pursue a Ph.D. in social work is an exciting process as there are many wonderful schools of social work, each with its own unique set of opportunities.

The challenge that you face will be to determine which school provides the best fit for you given your research interests, career goals, and lifestyle preferences. I am sure that as you embark on this journey, you will have many questions about the University of Wisconsin-Madison, our Ph.D. program, and the quality of life in Madison.

As you will read elsewhere on this website, our program strengths are in our ability to tailor our program towards students' interests while giving you the chance to train with faculty at the top of their fields, working within world-class research centers and institutes.

Our task is to provide you with the type of information that will be most helpful in determining whether UW-Madison is the right place for you. Hopefully this site will provide answers to many of your questions. I also encourage you to contact me either by email (ejkramer@wisc.edu) or by telephone 608/263-3830. I can help you identify faculty and students who share your research interests and talk with you about the quality of life at the University and in the city of Madison that can never be completely captured through a web site.

I wish you the best of luck in your search for a program that meets your educational needs and I look forward to talking with you more about our program at UW-Madison.

Sincerely,

Betty Kramer, Ph.D.
Professor and Chair of the Doctoral Program
