Financial Aid
Students needing financial assistance in the form of federal loans or work-study are encouraged to contact the UW-Madison Office of Student Financial Services, 432 N. Murray St., 608-262-3060. Click here for more information.
Individuals looking for funding opportunities are usually best served by starting in the Grants Information Center.
The UW Job Center offers a great online resource for finding graduate student assistantships on campus.
The School of Social Work has limited funding for students.
Health Care and Health Insurance
University Health Services (UHS) (608-265-5600) is the health clinic on campus, and it is open to any enrolled UW–Madison student. Most costs are included in enrollment fees.
Through UHS, the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) (608-265-5232) is available for students needing more comprehensive medical coverage (e.g., emergency room, hospitalization, and other specialized medical services; SHIP coverage also includes chiropractic care, oral surgery, a free eye exam, and 100% of the cost of select contraceptives). Coverage is also available for spouses and domestic partners. Annual plans and rates are listed on the SHIP website.
Housing
On-Campus The University has limited housing available for graduate students. The University Student Apartments, more commonly known as Eagle Heights, are located on the northwest end of campus near Lake Mendota and the Eagle Heights Community Garden. Eagle Heights can accommodate student families.
The Harvey Street Apartments are also part of the University Student Apartments, but they are available only for single graduate students. Harvey Street is about one-half mile from the southwest end of campus. The complex has 47 apartments, and students can choose to live alone or with a roommate.
To find out more information, visit the University Apartments website, call 608-262-3407, or write to University Apartments Office, 611 Eagle Heights, Madison, WI 53705.
Off-Campus The Campus Area Housing Listing Service maintains a searchable database for listings of private housing, including apartments, houses, rooms, efficiencies, co-ops, and roommates.
Madison is home to about 10 cooperative houses, wherein the residents of the house own and collectively manage and maintain the house. Co-op housing is a very good way to meet engaging Madisonians, including many students, and to live very cheaply in the process. To find out more information, visit the website of Madison Community Co-op, the city's association of housing co-ops, or call them at 608-251-2667.
Transportation
As a UW-Madison student, you are entitled to a bus pass for unlimited Madison Metro bus rides. Student bus passes are paid for through segregated fees. Passes are issued at Union South at the beginning of each semester, and at Memorial Union throughout the year. You must present your student ID to obtain a bus pass. For information on bus routes, check out the Madison Metro website or call 608-266-4466.
Child Care
The Office of Child Care and Family Resources (OCCFR) coordinates eight different sites on or close to campus at which child care is available. The centers are nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of the Young Child, are state licensed, and are accredited by the City of Madison. For more information, contact Lynn Edlefson, Director, at 608-262-9715, or visit the OCCFR website.
UW-Madison Domestic Partnership Policy
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is committed to diversification of the student body, faculty, and staff and to serving the needs of those groups. Given this commitment, it is critical that all members of the student body, faculty, and staff be accorded equal treatment. In that light, domestic partners of students, faculty, and staff are entitled to access all services (as allowed by State law and the University of Wisconsin). For complete details on how to access these benefits, see the policy statement issued by the UW-Madison Office of the Provost.
