Youth Shelter Advocate – Part-time

Days/Hours:
Approximately 40 hours per two week pay period.

Pay Range:
Starting pay $22.00 per hour. Additional compensation may be available based on
demonstrated bi-lingual abilities, job-related advanced degrees, and professional experience.

Description:
The Briarpatch Runaway and Homeless Youth Program is recruiting a part-time counselor to
work in our temporary shelter for runaway and homeless youth. This position includes nights
and weekends, typically 4:00 pm – midnight.

Duties:
• Oversees the daily activities of youth staying in the agency’s temporary shelter facility.
• Records documentation of client services and required paperwork in accordance with state
licensing rules and agency standards.
• Helps youth staying in the shelter with meal preparation, completion of daily chores,
completion of laundry and similar household responsibilities as needed.
• Maintains a working knowledge of shelter policies and procedures.
• Provides brief counseling to youth staying in the shelter.
• Supervises and facilitates recreational and vocational skill development outings.
• Maintain a safe and supportive environment for youth staying in the shelter
• Flexibility to participate in continuing education programming and monthly staff meetings

Education/Experience Qualifications:
• Experience working with teens and a background in education, social work, or related
human services field is preferred.
• Experience working in a youth shelter or group home setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of Positive Youth Development and Trauma Informed Care is preferred.

Required Skills:
• Must have the ability to work with youth from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and identities
including LGBTQIA+.
• Must possess the desire to engage with young people and interact with youth in various
settings.
• Must be able to transport youth in agency vehicles

Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift and move at least 50lbs and be able to stand and move for hours at a
time.
• Must complete a TB test and Health Check Form prior to employment.
• Must be able to assist youth in daily chores that includes cooking, laundry, and residential
cleaning.
• Must be 21 years old.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Reliable Transportation Required:
• Must have a valid driver’s license and a driving record that allows operation of agency-owned vehicles.
• Reliable transportation to work required.
