Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Social Work/Welfare Group (LGBT Allies)
The Social Work Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Questioning/Queer (LGBTQ) Allies is a student-led subgroup of the Social Work Student Union.
The mission of this organization is to make the UW-Madison School of Social Work a national leader in training social workers who are prepared and qualified to work with the LGBTQ community. We believe allyship is imperative to advancing acceptance, inclusion and equality for the LGBTQ community.
To build a community of qualified social workers, we will:
- Advocate on behalf of LGBTQ students
- Facilitate trainings for students, faculty and staff
- Address issues of campus climate
- Liaise with faculty and administration on issues in curriculum, climate and inclusion
- Work to ensure sustainability of the group from year to year
- Promote leadership and professional development opportunities
This organization also provides a vehicle for all social work students and faculty who are committed to providing inclusive non-biased social work services to people along the entire LGBTQ spectrum. In the past, members have worked on projects to encourage the integration of LGBTQ inclusive material into School curricula and brought speakers to the School to conduct workshops on LGBTQ issues as they relate to social work practice. Because this is a student-led group, it's focus varies by the interests of students in the group each academic year.
Interested parties can visit the LGBTQ Allies Facebook page or contact the group's faculty advisor for more information as well as meeting times and dates.
