Norma Berkowitz, Long-Time Faculty Member Passes Away

Headshot of Norma BerkowitzClinical Faculty Professor of Social Work Norma Berkowitz passed away on January 14, 2022, at the age of 92. She joined the faculty in 1968, retiring in 1993. Norma taught in the development disability and health areas, and was an active member of UW-Madison’s Waisman Center. A mentor to many students and colleagues, Norma’s service to the school, university, state and profession made her an exemplary model of the “Wisconsin Idea.”Always committed to international social work, following her retirement, Norma founded Friends of the Children of Chernobyl USA (FOCCUS), which established several community centers in communities affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster.  Acknowledging her work in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, Norma received a “Millennium Award” from the U.S. Department of State and was also honored by the United Nations.
