Congratulations to Alexandra “Alex” Garcia, MSW ’10, recipient of the 2025 School Social Worker of the Year Award from the Wisconsin School Social Workers Association (WSSWA). Alex, who works at DeForest Area High School, was nominated for this honor by two assistant principals. They highlighted her exceptional work with students, staff, and families, as well as her strong problem-solving and relationship-building skills.

Alex’s career path initially led her into criminal justice and medical social work, including a role at UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison. However, after witnessing a rise in teenage suicides and attempts, she felt compelled to take action. “There must be a way to intervene earlier,” she thought. This led her to return to school to pursue the credentials necessary to become a licensed school social worker.

We spoke with Alex just days after the tragic school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. In the aftermath, Alex had met with a student to discuss the impact of the event and provide immediate support. She would spend the following days working with others affected by the tragedy, demonstrating the deep commitment she brings to her role.

Receiving the WSSWA award was incredibly meaningful to Alex on multiple levels. When she accepted the honor at the WSSWA conference, she felt especially proud to represent her Latinx heritage. For her, the award is not just a tangible plaque, but a reminder of why she dedicates herself to this important work as she knows how crucial representation is for students and families.

One early memory that stands out for Alex is watching the TV series Judging Amy with her mother. The show featured a child welfare social worker, portrayed by Tyne Daly. Alex’s mother often told her, “That’s a profession you’d be good at.” Those words, spoken many years ago, have now come full circle in Alex’s life and career.
