Part-Time MSW Program Student Spotlight: Brittany Sherman

The Part-Time MSW Program allows students who are not able to pursue full-time study to work towards a master’s degree on a structured, time-extended basis with classes delivered in a hybrid manner. Some courses are designed as blended courses with a mix of online learning and in-person sessions, while others are taught as online courses. In-person sessions take place every other Saturday on our Madison campus.

Why did you choose the Part-Time Program?
I choose the Part-Time program because I wanted to work full-time, but also pursue my MSW. This program provides me the flexibility to live over an hour away from campus, work, and obtain my degree.

How would you describe your experience in the Part-Time MSW Program?
My experience in the part time MSW Program has been so insightful and impactful. Every professor that I have worked with in this program has experience in the field and are super knowledgeable in the diverse worlds of social work.

What has been your favorite course so far in the program and why?
My favorite course in the program has been Field Practice and Integrative Seminar Class. Nicole has been an amazing instructor and has done an amazing job creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment. It has been amazing getting to know my classmates and learning from their different fields and unique experiences.

How do you think the Part-Time MSW Program has prepared you for entering the field of social work?
The Part-Time MSW Program has prepared me to enter the social work field by allowing me the opportunity to be an active change agent. I have learned the power of advocacy and the importance of micro, mezzo, and macro level social work.

What would you say to someone who is considering the program?
I would recommend this program to anyone who wanted to pursue their MSW!

What UW support services have you used during your time in the program (i.e.: Writing Center, Social Work Library, etc.) and how did they help you?
I haven’t used many resources on campus because I live so far, but I am extremely grateful for my academic advisor, Anna Gorman. She has been amazing in supporting me and helping me feel less stressed about coming back into school after taking a break. She is so kind and patient. I’ve asked her a million questions and sometimes the same questions and she continues to find the answers that ease my mind. Thank you Anna!
