Overview

Thank you for your interest in the School of Social Work and the University of Wisconsin-Madison! The School has much to offer students interested in social work. We have strong faculty resources, outstanding community social work and social welfare programs, excellent students, and the resources of a world-renowned university.

 

Bachelor of Social Work and B.A./B.S. in Social Welfare

Our Undergraduate Programs provide broad exposure to the social and behavioral sciences. As a Social Welfare major, knowledge of the social welfare system will provide an excellent foundation for advanced education and a solid grounding in the social and behavioral sciences. The undergraduate Social Work major prepares students for entry-level social work practice within a variety of areas.

 

Master of Social Work

 

Two MSW students share their experience

The School of Social Work offers two Master's Programs: The Full-Time MSW Program and The Part-Time MSW Program. Our Master's Programs focus on advanced social work skills and knowledge you need to work effectively with a broad range of individual, family, group, community, organizational and societal concerns. With faculty assistance, you will have the opportunity to choose your field placements from more than 100 agencies. Focus areas in Aging; Child, Youth, and Family Welfare; Health; and Mental Health allow you to develop the expertise needed to be an outstanding practitioner. Our graduates have been very successful in finding social work employment throughout the U.S. and score very high on state license examinations post degree.

 

 

Ph.D. in Social Welfare

The Ph.D. Program prepares scholars to take leadership positions that advance social work practice, program evaluation, and social welfare policy. Consistently ranked as one of the best programs in the country, the hallmark of our program is the interdisciplinary and individualized design of our doctoral training. The curriculum encourages students to take full advantage of courses in the University’s world-renowned social and behavioral science departments and the many interdisciplinary centers and institutes on campus. Our graduates have gone on to tenure track positions at major universities in the U.S. and abroad.
