Luke Muetner is a Justice Researcher in RTI’s Corrections and Reentry Research Program. His research focuses on correctional programming, reentry support, and interventions, with a particular emphasis on parental incarceration and family well-being. Skilled in both quantitative and qualitative methods, he designs and evaluates programs in this field. Dr. Muetner’s work aims to inform policy reforms that promote equity for individuals and families affected by the criminal justice system. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored the book When Are You Coming Home? How Young Children Cope When Parents Go to Jail, from Rutgers University Press.

From RTI’s website:

“RTI International is an independent, nonprofit research institute dedicated to improving the human condition. Our vision is to address the world’s most critical problems with science-based solutions in pursuit of a better future. Clients rely on us to answer questions that demand an objective and multidisciplinary approach—one that integrates expertise across the social and laboratory sciences, engineering, and international development.”

Luke’s piece of advice to current social work students is:

“Find opportunities and experiences in both policy and practice. Working in the field with individuals and families and taking those front-line experiences to other roles involving policies, systems, rules and regulations has allowed me to make a deeper impact in my career.”

Luke’s favorite memory from the School of Social Work is:

It’s a toss-up between all the laughs with my friends in the program or nerding out over research with Dr. Charles, but both highlight the power of community and connection when navigating the highs and the lows of the program — a reminder that learning isn’t just about coursework but also the relationships and shared experiences that shape both personal and professional growth.
