Sara Knueve, MSW ’03, Appointed Deputy Assistant State Superintendent of Academics at Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction

State Superintendent of Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Dr. Jill Underly, appointed School alum Sara Knueve to the role of Assistant Deputy State Superintendent of Academics in March 2025. Prior to this new role, Sara was a policy advisor for the agency.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Sara is an advocate for education for all students in the state. She is committed to elevating best practices and policy to shape education for both today and in the future. Sara’s early career endeavors have their roots in community social work. She is a proud AmeriCorps alum and former Program Director of the Dane County Boys & Girls Club. Prior to joining DPI in 2022, she spent almost two decades in public education working in the Madison Metropolitan School District.

Since graduating from the MSW program, Sara has supervised several student field placements, including one currently. She adds, “I have always loved macro social work and policy. I am committed to supporting the next generation of social workers, especially those that love systems work and policy.”
